The Dove Foundation based in Grand Rapids, Michigan commissioned a study that says even though Hollywood produced 12 times more R-rated movies than G-rated movies from 1989 to 2003 -- G-rated movies were on average 11 times more profitable than the adult-rated films.
G-rated movies pulled in an average $79 million profit each while their R-rated counterparts made an average of only $6.9 million.
Even PG movies pulled in more profits than PG-13 or R-rated movies, the study said.
The study reached it's conclusions by looking at and comparing the costs and revenues of some 200 films released by major Hollywood studios during each year from 1989 to 2003.
An earlier Kagan study revealed that a PG-rated film was, on average, three times as likely as an R-rated film to earn at least $100 million in ticket sales.
Walt Disney Studios, which has been making four times as many R-rated films as family films, reportedly plans to even the ratio in the near future...
Are you dismayed by what you and your family are seeing and hearing through the many different entertainment media in our world today?
Are you concerned about the obvious negative influence and direct, or indirect, harm that this powerful industry is causing by its irresponsible decisions about the content of what it is offering as "entertainment"?
Are you angered, and even outraged, that the decision-makers in this industry are steadily going about the business of pushing the moral limits and tearing down all boundaries that determine what is suitable for public consumption as "entertainment", while hardly even being challenged about it?
If you find yourself answering "yes" to each of these questions, then this web site offers you one very practical way to begin taking that stand.
The "Time For A Change" Petition is currently being circulated throughout the United States with the express purpose of allowing concerned citizens, like yourself, the opportunity to go on record that you want to challenge the leaders of the entertainment industry to start moving in a new direction concerning the content of their products.
We should not have to threaten legislative action or boycotts to get the attention of these industry leaders. Surely, there is a place in their own hearts where they can be touched concerning the need for positive change. But, first, we must get their attention!
If enough individuals from all across our great country band together into one collective voice, that voice will be heard. Sign the petition. Print out a copy and take it with you to church, or school, or work, or anywhere that you will meet people just like you--people who care enough to stand up and be heard!
We, the below signed, are praying for you, the decision-makers who determine the content of movies, television programming, and other entertainment media. We are praying that you will more fully understand that you are not simply "entertainers", using life as it has happened for your storylines, but you are also "influencers" of life as it's about to happen. As such, you have taken great responsibility upon your shoulders -- responsibility for which you will surely be held accountable. Therefore, for the sake of all that's good and right for our children, our families, our nation, our world, and yourselves, we are praying that you will start to focus your creative endeavors on themes that will build up the viewers and listeners as they are entertained. Instead of "painting" pictures of man at his worst ( the illicit, perverted sex; the vile, obscene language; the blood and guts of deprived, criminal activity; the dark side of man's spiritual quest; etc.), start using your vast array of talents and skills to portray man striving for his best ( the heart and soul of good, wholesome people; the traits and accomplishments of others that make each of us want to be a better person; the laughter that comes from clean, decent comedy; the life-changing moments that come from an encounter with GOD; etc. ). You know in your heart that what we are asking is the right thing to do. Stand tall, and do it. You'll be glad you did!
That "media does more than just entertain. Media is a powerful teacher! When we consume media without consciously thinking about it, the messages powerfully shape the way we think, talk, and act… It’s important to remember that media is never neutral. Someone has constructed the media and its message." (I Want to Talk With My Teen About Movies, Music and More written by Dr. Walt Mueller, president of Center for Parent/Youth Understanding)
That "for many children, the mass media has become their primary caregiver and teacher. The average child in the United States gets only about 21 minutes a day of primary attention with their parents, but, according to the Motion Picture Association, spends up to 10.25 hours per day with the internet and Television." (The Culture-Wise Family written by Ted Baehr, publisher of Movieguide and Chairman of the Christian Film & Television Commission)
That the American Medical Assoc., the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Psychology Assoc., and the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry issued a joint statement, stating that there is no doubt that viewing entertainment violence can lead to increases in aggressive attitudes, values and behaviors, particularly in children. (Issued July 2000)
That 87% of entertainment media leaders who responded to a survey reluctantly admitted that they are convinced that violence in the mass media has contributed to violence in society.
